A 90s Movies.net Editorial

90s moviesSince the creation of 90s Movies.net, the goal of the site has been to entertain and elicit the sentiment associated with all things pop culture from the forgotten decade. It’s important to recapture that essence to combat the growing apathy and cynicism regarding our current state of existence.

The 90s always had an overwhelming feeling of intangible perfection. This was a decade of grunge rock, slick two-timing presidents, unforgettable sitcoms, colorful and nutritionally-devoid snack foods, and endless amounts of fun. Those days, before cell phones and social networking, were part of the last generation of children who discovered and appreciated life on their own terms.

90s movies When you heard a dirty word on the schoolyard, in movie theaters, or from your parents, you didn’t go home and google it to find out what it meant. You were forced to ask older kids, older siblings, or creepy homeless men outside of the local 7-11 what it meant. This overabundance of readily-available information is a detriment to society.

90s moviesKids don’t go outside anymore. As a child, I almost never spent the days indoors. Our summers were filled with neighborhood-wide games of manhunt and I knew every backyard on my street as if it were my own. Kids were allowed to be kids. I’d only come back inside for lunch, dinner, and when 9 o’clock rolled around.

90s Movie Review: Edward Scissorhands

90s moviesWhen it comes to 90s movies, there are many films that would seem too obscure to reach profitable popularity in any other decade, but in the 90s they produce a massive cult following. One of these films is Tim Burton’s humble, lovable Edward Scissorhands.

90s moviesOur story begins in an old, lonely castle atop a menacing hill. It is there that an inventor lives, creating new devices and tinkering around with them. One day, he decides to create a man whom he decides to named Edward. The scientist is like a father figure to the creature, but dies before he is able to finish making Edward. Left alone, confused, and with scissors for hands, Edward isolates himself in a dark corner of the castle and watches the days pass by. It isn’t until the super-friendly, motherly makeup saleswoman, Peg, discovers him that he is granted a new life. Peg pities Edward and decides to invite him into her home.

90s moviesHis scissor hands are not appreciated by everyone, though, and his eccentricities quickly become a barrier to friendship and acceptance. Through his own quiet, gentle, humble disposition, Edward eventually makes an impression on everyone he meets. Whether it be curiosity, anger, or fear, Edward is the talk of the neighborhood.

90s moviesUnfortunately, Edward’s good nature leaves him open to be taken advantage of. His artistic use of his scissor hands is exploited and he is tricked into burglarizing a house by Peg’s daughter and her asshole boyfriend. Edward’s frustration and feelings of rejection make him shy away from society, and he also learns that he is unable to touch others without accidentally hurting them with his sharply-bladed fingers. The townspeople’s curiosity and love toward him is replaced with fear and a desire to get rid of him.

Top 10 90s Fashion Trends

The 90s were a time of rebellion and cultural chaos, as anti-fashion dogmas and a casual, relaxed, “anything goes” kind of fashion emerged. T-shirts, jeans, and maybe a plaid shirt were the usual attire, and people were comfortable with that. There were, however, trends that seemed to take the world by storm. After all, everyone wants to look good. That’s why we’re taking a look at the Top 10 90s Fashion Trends to find out which styles stuck around and which were too silly to survive.

10. Denim Jackets

Not to be outdone by its kindred companion, the denim jeans, the denim jacket sits high among the ranks of lovable 90s fashion. Every girl remembers the first bad boy they saw sporting this fashionable item while leaning against a ’92 Mustang. Take it from Luke Perry: you weren’t cool unless you owned one of these.

90s Music Review: Blind Melon

It seems as if people are too concerned with finding new music to occupy themselves without taking the time to respect and appreciate music that has come from years past. There’s such a vast backlog of music I want to take the time to fully experience before I move on in my neverending journey to find the perfect grooves that, sometimes, great albums are overlooked.

I want to take this time to acknowledge an album that graces my iPod nearly every day: Blind Melon’s self-titled album.

From the first to last note on this impressive record, the late Shannon Hoon and company belt out some unforgettable tunes. With the bluesy, almost Joplin-esque vocals of Hoon crooning over every track, it is a feast for the ears. Blending the genres of psychedelic, blues rock, and even metal, Blind Melon puts together a record that is truly inspirational and unique.

My favorite lyrics on the album can be found in the song “Change” and they perfectly describe the style and attitude of this legendary band: Continue reading
